Although many people aren’t aware of it, crawl spaces are required by law to contain ventilation. If your crawl space reach outside of the area of your home, however, you potentially face issues with taking in moisture. Not only can this lead to greater problems with your crawl space, but potentially your health too. Odor, mold and other fungi are bad for your well being, and no one enjoys an odor growing from beneath their home.
Air circulation helps to combat mold, but the biggest source of moisture, and thus thriving mold, comes directly from the soil itself. You can eliminate this problem by covering the soil in vapor barriers. Vapor barrier replacement helps to block the moisture from entering the crawl space, and in return your home.
Another disadvantage of any outdated crawl space is lack of insulation. Improperly repaired or simply having old insulation can let cold air into your home, as well as letting warm air escape. This isn’t only uncomfortable (no one likes to be cold in their own home!), but is potentially wasting money in an attempt to heat the outdoors. Take care of damaged insulation also, as it can contain unwanted mold. Depending on the situation, you may want to look into insulation installation or insulation removal.
Lastly, standing water in your crawl space can occur if your gutters run off near the foundation, or if your yard is inclined towards your home. Water drains into the homes foundation, collecting in your crawl space, and settling as a pool. This can cause rotting wood, fungal growth and other long-term problems for your home and health.
